Member scores

Member scores

What are these scores things?

The scores give an indication of how active and popular a member is on the website. Scores are made up of three values like this:

10 / 13 / 67

These values represent activity points / contribution points / popularity points.

Activity points

Activity points give an idea of how active a member has been on the site recently, and are gained by posting comments or taking part in the forums.
The maximum value for activity points is 50.

Contribution points

Contribution points reflect how much the member has added to the site recently, and are gained by posting photos, challenges and writing blog entries. Points can also be gained if a member reports a bad photo or a broken link and it's subsequently removed by a moderator.
The maximum value for activity points is 50.

Popularity points

Popularity points show the total number of points that the member has been awarded by other members.
These points are awarded for winning (or being a runner-up in) dares, and are also awarded when someone votes for the member with the 'I like this member' link on their public portfolio.
There is no maximum value for these points.

What is it that they do, exactly?

To other people viewing your public portfolio they're just used to indicate if you've been up to much lately, and just how popular you are.

To you they're the key to getting yourself an enhanced account.

How do I earn these points?

To begin, there's a limit to how many points you can earn per day. This is to discourage people flooding the site with posts or comments just to earn an enhanced account. The points also have a lifespan, which means that they'll expire after a certain amount of time.

Activity points: Earn up to 10 points per day. These points last for 7 days.
You earn activity points from commenting on photos, challenges or blogs, or when you post in the forums.

Contribution points: Earn up to 15 points per day. These points last for 20 days.
You earn contribution points from posting a photo in the gallery, writing a blog entry or creating a challenge.
You can also earn points if you report a photo for breaking the site rules and the moderator accepts your report, and for reporting broken links in the links gallery which sunsequently get removed.

Popularity points: There are no limits on popularity points, and they don't expire.
You get popularity points from winning a dare (5 points), being a runner-up in a challenge (2 points) or you get a point for each member that votes for you with the 'I like this member' link on your public portfolio.

If you reach your daily limit for activity or contribution points, you can still post but no more points will be added to your scores.

How many points do I need in order to get an enhanced account?

It depends on how popular you are! Your activity and contribution points are added together, and if their sum is equal to or greater than 50 points, your account is automatically converted into an enhanced account for the next 10 days. However, if your popularity score is over 50 then your activity and contribution points only need to add up to 30. Got that?

So:
Popularity score is 50 or more? Activity + contribution needs to be 30 or more.
Popularity score is under 50? Activity + contribution needs to be 50 or more.

Don't I get an enhanced account permanently?

No. Unless you subscribe to a gold account, in which case you're guaranteed to have one for a year.

Every time you earn an activity or contribution point which keeps your combined score over the target score defined above, then your enhanced account expiry date will be extended to 10 days from that date*. So if you're active on the site on a reasonably regular basis then it won't be hard to keep your enhanced account.

*Unless the expiry date is over ten days from then, in which case it won't be touched.

What if I don't score any points for a while?

If you're not active on the site for a while then your enhanced account will expire. You may still have unexpired points in your score, so you just need to post a few things to top it up and reactive your enhanced account.

As the points you're awarded have a lifespan, then not posting for a while means that your activity and contribution scores will gradually move back down to zero. Your popularity points are permamnent, so they won't disappear in the same way.

If you had an enhanced account and it expired, if you had more active photos than the normal limit allows then they'll be flagged as excess photos.

My popularity score went down! I thought you said it couldn't.

Popularity points don't have a lifespan like activity and contribution points, but they can still go down. Your popularity score is the sum of all the points you've got from winning challenges and from other members voting for you.
However, if you delete a photo that won a dare or you remove it from the dare, or if a member retracts their vote for you then that means your popularity score will have those points deducted.
