Chatrooms help

Chatrooms help

Overview

The chatrooms allow you to chat to Chortleberry in real-time through your browser. Members can enter all public rooms or create their own roomswhereas guests (non-members) can only enter 'The Lounge'.

Entering a chatroom

To enter a chatroom, click on the name of the room. A pop-up window will appear with the chatroom, so you'll need to make sure that your browser allows pop-ups for this site.
You can only enter rooms that you have permission to enter; rooms that you can enter appear as a link that you can click. To enter a private room you need to request access to that room by clicking the 'Request access' link in the access column. The chat window will launch in a pop-up window and the room owner will be notified that you're asking to be let in. The room owner can decide to grant or reject your request. An alert will tell you when they've decided. If access is granted then you'll automatically enter the room.

Chatting

Once you're in the room you'll see the conversation from the last few minutes and a list of the members currently chatting on the right. If you're in 'The lounge' you'll also see any guests present too.

To talk, type something into the text entry box and press enter or click the 'Say' button. You can also select a member to send a direct message to, which won't show up for other users in the room (this facility is not available in 'The lounge').

If another person in the room is being annoying, you have the option to ignore anyhting they say. Click the 'ignore' link next to their username, and anything they say will be filtered out, including any private messages to you. To see their messages again, click 'unignore'.

Leaving a chatroom

To exit a room, click the 'Exit room & close window' button rather than clicking on the top-right x. This will log you out of the room properly. Otherwise the system will log you out if you don't say anything for serveral minutes.
To regain access to a room, simply click the link to the room on the chatroom list page.

Creating your own room

Members are able to create their own rooms. Just click on the 'Create your own chatroom' link and give your room a name. You get to choose between making it a private room or a public room. Any other members can enter a public room, but members need to request access from you to enter a private room. You'll see a list of members requesting access right-hand side of the chatroom window. Just click 'grant' to let them in, or 'reject' not to.
In private rooms you also have the option to evict members that are being unruly by clicking on the 'evict' link next to their username. This feature is only available in private rooms.

Closing your own chatroom

Once nobody have said anything in the chatroom for ten minutes or so, the system will automatically close your chatroom. This will happen to all chatrooms apart from rooms owned by 'Chortleberry'.
