What makes a photographer? For the last 3 years I've owned a digital SLR, not because I'm an accomplished photographer but because I like gadgets and I like taking photographs. When I talk to people about photography I generally start off feeling inadequate in some way - I can't talk with authority about f-stops or white balance and rarely go outside the cameras "auto" settings.
But then I look at some of the results I've had with my point and click style and think that perhaps I'm not missing anything - I like my pictures, I enjoy taking my "snaps" and family and friends generally say nice things, and not because they're being polite.
So what makes a good photographer? It can't be the kit, or else I'd be published by National Geographic. It can't be technical knowledge, as some of the really techies I've met on the web take awful photo's.
What all good photographers seem to have though is a passion for taking a picture, be it with the latest top of the range set up or in the case of my son with a kiddies digital camera.
So whilst there is fun to be had, and as no one is paying me for my pictures I guess I'll keep playing with my camera and honing my skills in the best way I know - and looking for hints and tips from folks on sites like this one.
