Ratio's

Following on from my question about what makes a good photographer I started to think about numbers and metrics (a curse of my job!) and wondered what the ratio of my photo's are in various states of quality

Out of every 500 shots (and it's not difficult to take this many in a day) I'd guess that =

200 are rubbish - straight deletion

150 are acceptable - nothing special, keepers for memories but not to share

100 are tolerable - can be improved in photoshop and made to look a lot better

40 are reasonable good - they came out as I wanted and expected, still need a little photoshop but not much

6 are good - the sort of things to share with other people, where everything has come out well

3 are excellent - these are the photo's which work and where I think, yeah, maybe I can do this photography thing

1 is stunning - and I ask myself did I really take that? Everyone gets lucky, and this is my lucky shot - right place, right time

It's generally the last 10 that I'll post to a photo community, perhaps some of the reasonable ones where my photoshop skills have improved them sufficiently

So, what ratio's do you think you shoot to?

Ha ha.

My standards are a bit higher. Out of 1000 photos, I'd say that 990 are rubbish, five are mediocre, four good and just one exceptional.

One of the 'tricks' of professional photographers is simply to take a million shots and then spend a while picking the best one. In the days of film they'd buy those big rolls of film with dozens of frames on them.
I bet they're loving the digital cameras.

Wheelybird is right up to a point. Pro's like the paps, fasion and glamour photographers fire off hundreds of frames then a picture editor chooses the best, but I think what makes a good photographer is someone who can spot a picture, like a landscape for example, and then have the knowledge and patience to come back when the conditions are right to make the perfect picture. So I guess I would say a good photographer is one who can get the best shot, on the first attempt, through being prepared in the first place.
